5 Things to consider before planning a trip to the Greek Islands

I had the privilege of visiting the beautiful Greek Islands, Santorini and Mykonos in April and here are 5 points that I think are worth sharing.

I hope this can help some of you.

1. Take advantage of a stop over in Athens to visit the Acropolis and see the Parthenon

The Acropolis consist of remains of several ancient buildings with great architecture and historic significance. The Parthenon is the most notable building there due to the fact that it was the most perfect building built by the world’s most advanced civilizations.

You also get a beautiful view of the city of Athens when you make it all the way to the top!

The cost of admission is 12 euros. But they do offer free admission on specific dates, in addition to all the students in the E.U. Check all the details from the hours of operations and the updated admission cost here.

2. The best way to get around the island is to rent an ATV for as low as 10 euros/day

We rented ATVs in both Santorini and Mykonos and I can tell you that you definitely get the bang for your buck here! You are responsible for pumping gas but just 5 euros of gas should be enough for you to go around the island for the day. Plus, driving these bad boys was SO much fun!

3Don’t expect a big party scene if you go at any time except May-August

Mykonos is the party island in Greece and the parties there are often compared to the ones in Ibiza where famous DJs, like tiesto and afrojack, would play during beach day parties and night. But if you go even in April, don’t expect to see the real party city Mykonos. Unless you go in the summer months, you’ll find the biggest club, Paradise Club closed. But you can still find other smaller parties on the beach at places like The Tropicana in Paradise beach.

4. Visit the Red beach in Santorini. It’s unique and worth the experience.

red beachThis beach is located in the Aktorini area, only a 10-15 min ATV drive from the town of Fira. The beach has earned its name from the reddish volcanic sand.

Keep in mind that this beach isn’t the best for sun bathing since the sand is quite rough and rocky. However, it provides for amazing pictures due to the contrast of the red sand color and the greenery right beside it.

There is also white beach and black beach to visit, which unfortunately we did not make it to.

5. You pay more for a hotel with a view. You decide if the trade off is worth it.

There is  accommodation for every budget in both Santorini and Mykonos. But what you really pay a lot for is the view of the hotel and the location. For examples, I found out that the hotels in the town of Fira in Santorini were more expensive than other town. It’s because Fira is the main town with the most nightlife.

You can also find cheap accommodations in Mykonos, especially if you decide to not stay close to the old town of Mykonos. If you are mostly in Mykonos for the parties and you are on a budget, I would suggest booking a hostel on Paradise beach or Paraga Beach.

We stayed at Cori Rigas Suites while in Santorini and it could not have been more perfect. It has a beautiful view of the caldera that can’t be beat.

While in Mykonos, we stayed at Vencia Boutique Hotel. Again, we would not want to change anything since everything was amazing already. It has a gorgeous infinity pool overlooking the old town of Mykonos.

Hope this could help someone out there. If there any questions don’t hesitate to comment and ask 🙂
